Donut

2024 Blender

This is the first 3D model I created in Blender by following the popular Donut series by Blender Guru. My aim was to learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling and animation and get familiar with Blender so that I can create basic models for my games if and when required.

My PC was taking about 40 minutes to render one frame! So I researched and found I could use a render farm to render the video. I stumbled upon GarageFarm and used their render farm to achieve the stunning result as evident from the below video, so a huge shoutout to them.

Learnings

I learned:

  • to use common shortcuts of Blender and get familiar with its UI.
  • about different meshes and their geometry and properties.
  • to alter geometry/properties of meshes using tools like grab, scale, extrude, etc.
  • to use modifiers like subdivision surface and solidify.
  • to manage objects using collections.
  • about parent and child relationships between objects.
  • to use modeling and sculpting to achieve the desired result.
  • about the fundamentals of texture paint and shading.
  • to use geometry nodes and modify geometry of objects with more control.
  • to create animations.
  • about rendering engines and to use them to render image or video.
  • about render farms for faster and efficient rendering.
  • ...a lot more that needs more practice to feel confident.
